Went down to Chinatown today to have dinner at a “newly discovered” eatery. It’s been a long time since I last visited Chinatown. It has changed quite a bit. More places to eat, drink and shop, typical tourist-land. But one thing remains - It’s the cleanest Chinatown that I have been to.

Dinner’s at a seafood restaurant located near the start of Smith Street. It used to be a coffee shop. Here’s some of what we ordered:

Fried squid with oat

This is Calamari at a higher level! The squids are fried to perfection: Crispy on the outside, the squid is still tender and juicy on the inside (not over cooked). The oat flakes, unlike some others, were not oily and complements the squids well. How I wish I had a pint of beer!

Butter Pork

The dish’s name caught our attention, so we decided to give it a try. Not quite what I would expect. The sauce is thick and creamy but it lacks the all-important butter taste. and it’s a bit too salty. The tender meat goes well with the oat flakes from the squid dish though :)

Sze Chuan hot and spicy soup

This soup is just DELICIOUS.! Unlike most of the Sze Chuan hot and spicy soup I had, which are either too spicy or too sour, this one has the perfect blend. Flavourful and very appetizing. I just could stop drinking it. Goes very well with rice too. This is definitely a must-try dish.

Home-made Tou Fu

This is the best dish of the night. The magic is in the sauce. Consisting of minced meat, chopped salted-fish and chopped mushroom. Very simple yet potent combination. Like the squid dish, the beancurd is fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside, and when you bite into it, the beancurd literally melts in your mouth! It’s that soft. This is a die-die-must-try dish man!

Will I go back again? - YES!

With a stomach of good food, we took a walk around Chinatown. And this is what we saw:

The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. If you haven’t been there, please do make a visit someday. It’s kinda breath-taking.
