Tong Shui Cafe is located at 54 Zion Road (opposite Great World City), Singapore 247779. After much media hype, my cousins and I decided to check this eatery out. Their business model is based on selling comfort good in a cosy and lazy setting. “Tong Shui” means dessert in Cantonese, they offer more than just desserts alone.

Main meals

They have a very wide variety of food. Over 300 types will greet you in the menu. They offer, besides desserts, a fusion of East and West cuisines. For East, they have the familiar “You Char Kueh” or YCK as they called it, “Chee Chong Fan” (CCF) and Nissin noodles (yes.. instant noodles). In the name of entrepreneurship, the owner decided to repackage these common food with fancy names and some add-ons. For example, they have CCF with Mango Roll and Sunset egg, Kimchi-Flavoured noodles with luncheon meat and ham. Their kimchi noodles are actually nissin noodles with a dash of chilli power, there’s no kimchi flavour at all.

It’s the same with their other East offerings, just a mix and match of food onto a plate.

For West, they have better offerings like Italian pasta, cheese baked rice and sandwiches.

Drinks

Cuppucino-coke: taste bad and as weird as it sounds. Chin-Chow coffee, basically it’s just dark coffee. Great effort on the creativity, but no points for the quality.

Desserts

The only item that tingled my tastebuds was the Snowy Mango Mountain with Pomelo. It’s basically shaved ice with mango toppings. However, what made it so special and tasty is the Pomelo. The pomelo adds frangance and texture to the dessert.

I feel that this shop is trying its best to infuse the traditional with some modern touches. However I think it will be better if they just stick to selling traditionl stuffs. Will I go back again? - I’ll have my Prata Kosong + Prata Teloh + Teh Tarik or Bak Chor Mee + Cheng Teng anytime.
