Updated: Apparently this chain’s bad press has been going on for a while:
Forum thread 1 | Forum thread 2

Recently my brother and I went to this fast-food chain in Singapore that sells mainly Fish & Chips and fried chicken fillets. (I’m not going to name the chain as you and I know that Internet isn’t that safe) So I queued up and ordered Combo 2. It consists of 1 piece fish, 2 pieces of chicken, fries and a drink. It costs S$5.60.
Then the conversation between me and the waitress followed:
Waiteress: What do you want for your drink? Regular or large?
Me: Regular. (To me, and I believe to any customers, regular means the norm, the usual, the one shown on the picture, I do not want to change it, while large means a bigger one, an upsized one.)
When my food came, I was charged S$5.90, which was 30 cents more than it should be. Puzzled, so I asked the waiteress:
“May I know how come it’s $5.90?”
She replied:
“Sir, for drinks, regular means medium.”
I paid the extra 30 cents nonetheless.
The point I’m trying to make is that, why can’t they just ask the customer whether he/she would like to upsize the drink and not asking such a misleading question! They can even say regular means medium, when there’s no such notation on their menu. This is purely misinfomation. At the very least, put the sizes available nice and clear on the drinks menu.
I of course do not mind the extra 30 cents. What I mind is the unethical way they do business. Mislead the customers just to earn that extra amount of money? Are they so desperate that they need that extra money just to stay alive?
I don’t know if anyone of you out there has similar experience. As far as I’m concerned, they just lost a customer and won my bad-mouthing.

hmm.. i’d be thinking that regular means regular. does regular means large? hahaha eh im quite surprised you didnt quarrel with her on that =p
I did complained to the manager. and the manager told me he’s just folllowing HQ’s order
I fucking agree with you!
ALRIGHT! haha never gonna patronize them anymore NEVER!
“Holland Village Homemade Soya Bean”, #01-13 at the renovated food centre in Holland Village is even worse.
Their pictorial menu indicates a price of 60 cents for Soya Bean and Grass Jelly (Chin Chow), but when you order a cup, they charge you 80 cents. The rationale given to me, on questioning, is that 60 cents is the price for the small cup, but they have given me the bigger cup. That would be fair enough (if still faintly unethical) if the price for the bigger cup were displayed on the menu, but it isn’t.
This is worse than what Long John Silver’s does.
man.. that’s even worst!
Best dont drink lol
ya don’t try theirs.. this kind of business do no deserve my money
that’s bad…I had the same incident with his FISH & CHIPS outlet u were referring to. I was like..hey, $0.30 might not be much but it’s not the way to indicate that regular = medium. strange y they dun tell me regular = large since everyone orders large drinks. =p
precisely!! it’s not that we cannot afford to “Donate” 30cents to them.. but they are just plain unethical!
Regular or Large?
I will always respond: “SMALL!”
I’m not gonna say anything. cos i’m not going back there again!
?? as much as i haf been told regular to me was always medium since when regular means small?..?
if u are talking in the context of a menu, like the one Mac’s. Regular is indeed medium . However, in this case, the word “regular” in the context of the question means “the usual one”. It refers to:
“Would you like to have the REGULAR size or the LARGER size?”
In either case, what they could have done is just to ask: ”
“Sir would you like to UPSIZE your drink?”
Plain, straightforward and easy to understand.
What they want to do is fleece you, so of course they won’t make themselves clear.
They earn a few cents in the short run, but kill customer satisfaction in the long run.
I still eat there, but only because it’s cheap.
i respect your opinion and I totally agree with you on the killing of customer satisfaction part.
Their food are cheaper when compared to the rest of the fast-food chains nonetheless, but in the long-run, they will also lose customers’ confidence.
Hi dewei, You can sue them for misrepresentation.
U can claim for damages and rescission of contract. hahah
just quoting some stuff from my Biz LAw whahaha
Oh yeah. got more? Biz law rocks! hahaha
This has been going on for a long time…the initial issues that were raised before were that customers were forced to upgrade to larger drinks because they were out of the smaller cups! Now what sort of logic is that?
Since my last visit a few years ago (excluding that day), I didn’t encounter such thing. Though they already had a bad reputation for poor customer service, and I never expected it to be that bad!
Regarding your “small-cups-are-out-of-stock” experience, it’s pure nonsensical logic! (and a rather lame excuse).
ice: forced to upgrade because they ran out of smaller cups? wow i think thats rubbish.. shuold they be publicly humiliated?
Seb: We should not publicly humiliate them. It’s not the staffs’ fault, neither is the manager’s. They are just workers carrying out the instructions from their HQ.
I think what we can do is either don’t patronize them or if you really have to go there, just tell the staff serving you that you do not want anything extra.
i have learn my lesson cos i always kena the wrong size n i cant finish.. so i always tell them i want the “SMALLEST” size drink :)
